How to check your skin for skin cancer

One easy way to remember common characteristics of melanoma is to think alphabetically – the ABCDEs of melanoma. ABCDE stands for asymmetry, border, color, diameter and evolving.

Does the mole or spot have an irregular shape with two parts that look very different?

B

Border

Is the border irregular or jagged? The spot may have an irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined border.

C

Color

Is the color uneven? The spot has varying colors from one area to the next.

D

Diameter

Is the mole or spot larger than the size of a pea? Melanomas are usually greater than 6 millimeters.

E

Evolving

Has the mole or spot changed during the past few weeks or months?

Only about 3 percent of all skin cancers are melanoma, but these 3 percent account for about 75 percent of all cancer deaths.
